Salt production is managed by Shambar Salts Ltd.(SSL), a joint venture of the Hindustan Salts Ltd. and the state government.
Sambhar lake has been also designated as a Ramsar site (wetland of international importance) as the wetland is the home of Flamingos and other birds which migrate from Northern Asia. Though Sambhar Lake was designated as a Ramsar Site in 1990 and also an Important Bird Area, it does not fall under any category of Wildlife Sanctuary, National Park or a Reserve or for that matter any conservation cover under the Wildlife (Protection) Act. It is therefore required that this unique wetland with its rich biological diversity should be protected under the umbrella of Wetland Reserve with a legal framework.
